A CITY OF COLLABORATION AND HARMONY

Indonesia has many examples of what is locally called “rukun”. Meaning social harmony or tolerance more than most, Yogyakarta embodies this idea due to being at the heart of one of the largest island in the archipelago. This also leads to another Indonesian core idea known as “gotong royong”, which can be best described as community volunteerism and collaboration. While volunteerism does play a part in many sectors of the city, the real element of “gotong royong” is collaboration.

Be it one of the many coffee shops showcasing the collaboration of coffee experts from around the world or the harmony of the simple conversations being enjoyed at the side of the road – Yogyakarta is a city of shared ideas, thoughts and dreams.

Another element of collaboration is a strong educational presence in the city. Thousands of scholars and students come to the city in search of education with many of the universities offering a unique perspective that allows the opportunity to work with like-minded people and follow their dreams. The collaboration of history and modern living allows for unique collaboration possibilities, which results in amazing art and music throughout the city.

Culinary collaboration is also a big part of the city’s charm with a strong notion of sharing a meal and ideas. With Yogyakarta being so centralised the cuisine in the city mixes and offers flavours from all over the archipelago, such as Mie Ayam Bu Tumini, Baksonya Bakso Maharani or Bakmi Mbah Mo. Many luxury restaurants are always opening up through the city, which offers tastes from around the world, but the local delicacies are something that collaborates delicious flavours and exciting ideas.
