The diversity of Java is legendary with people all across the island expressing their proud beliefs through art, dance and creative flair. However, very few things are as truly Javanese as the famed shadow puppets that tell stories of the kings and queens that once ruled the lands. One of the most authentic places to experience these unique methods of storytelling is Yogyakarta. Many puppeteers, or Dalang, offer mystical tales of love and heroics against impossible odds using hand-made made puppets known as Wayang.
Made of leather, the Wayang puppets are set behind a well-lit stage with their shadows cast as they dance to the rhythm of the gamelan. Often the music is accompanied by a soft female voice who helps to set the scene and tell the story. The loud band and singing will definitely keep you awake during some of the quieter moments!
With over half a millennium in experience, the crafting and performance of the Wayang puppets is a wonder to behold and unlike anything else in Asia. There are many places that show the shadow puppet’s tale with performances taking place in professional establishments – even near the temples that make Yogyakarta so famous.
Witnessing the shadows dance across the aged brick walls and high ceilings, you’ll be forgiven for losing yourself in the story of Mahabharata, a tale of lost kingdoms and bitter rivalry amongst a once close family. Although Wayang puppets are some of the more famous examples of puppetry across Java, you can also see more traditional creations and performances in Yogyakarta. As some puppeteers choose to use string puppets in their stories, they do away with shadows and instead use the more traditional stage.
The Papermoon Theatre is an amazing place to start for those who are new to the world of puppetry. They are well-respected in the puppetry arts and hold regular workshops, classes, exhibitions and performances for all to see and take part in. One such activity is the international puppet biennale that is held every October in Yogyakarta since 2008; welcoming puppeteers and enthusiasts from around the world.
Whether you’re at a museum, a theatre or just the winding streets, the stories that are told are performed with pride and skill that will no doubt remain at the heart of the bustling cultural city. The of love and passion that goes into creating Wayang puppets will always be present on whichever styled stage they are performed on.
